PARISH CATECHISTS
..."there is a particular need to...re-institute the ministry of catechesis as a means of education and faith development..."
(Ecclesia in Europa No 51)
Currently, the term 'Catechist' is used to refer to a number of functions in parish life. Each has its own characteristics.
Children's Catechist
Parish Catechist
RCIA Catechist
See below on the support and formation offered for each.

Children's Parish Catechists
Working with children at times of Sacramental preparation.
Home - School - Parish

The Department currently trains Catechists who work with children at times of Sacramental Preparation, supplementing the work already carried out in schools and the Family Workbooks which the children's families use at home.

If you wish to become involved in your parish in this ministry, please contact your priest initially.

Training for this normally commences in the autumn .

Sacramental Workbooks
Four sessions look at children's catechesis in general, before focussing on the materials for First Reconciliation. A second series of four sessions look at catechesis for Confirmation and Fist Communion.
Materials are also available to help in the preparation of children up to p2 for Baptism.

Parish Catechists

This term is becoming more widely used for those taking a lead in faith formation in parish more generally, for families, adults, or other catechetical priorities in each parish.

These are individuals who have been commissioned to the stable ministry of Catechist by the Archbishop, on completion of the two-year Award in Catholic Theological Education, our formation programme run in partnership with the University of Glasgow.

RCIA Catechist
Supporting adults on their journey towards the Sacraments
There is a particular privilege involved in accompanying adults who are exploring their faith in preparation for joining the Church through our Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults. Support is offered particularly through the Pastoral Liturgy work of the Archdiocese and its RCIA Committee. An in-service conference for RCIA catechists is normally held on the last Saturday of October. Go to the Pastoral Liturgy website (www.rcagliturgy.org.uk) for more information or contact liturgy@onetel.com.
