The Religious Education Curriculum

In August 2010, Scotland's education system shifted from using the Curriculum known as "5 to 14" to that called "A Curriculum For Excellence", promoting a range of new principles and techniques embedded in all aspects of Education, from Nursery to upper Secondary (3 to 18).

Religious Education in Roman Catholic Schools reflects this change.  For full details of the "Experiences and Outcomes" published for Religious Education click here.

Echoing the structure of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, religious education is presented as a process of exploration, experience and discovery of Faith Professed (Creed), Faith Celebrated (Liturgy & Sacraments), Faith Lived (Moral Life) and Faith Prayed (Prayer).  This is organised under eight headings called "Strands of Faith":

Mystery of God

Revealed Truth of God

In the Image of God

Son of God

Word of God

Signs of God

Hours of God

Reign of God

"This Is Our Faith"

Guidance for schools and teachers is being issued under the direction of the Catholic Education Commission through the Scottish Catholic Education Service (SCES) entitled "This Is Our Faith" (click here for more). This document - which is available in draft form only - is currently subject to approval and amendment by the Holy See.

The document contains four main sections plus additional notes:

  1. Guidance on the nature and purpose of Catholic Religious Education;
  2. Doctrinal and theological summaries for each of the eight "Strands of Faith";
  3. Methods and practise in the teaching of Religious Education
  4. Detailed advice on the Core Learning embedded in the Experiences and Outcomes at each stage;

Additionally, the guidance includes a Prayer Grid, listing the prayers to be learned at key stages,

a Glossary of theological and technical terms and Notes on specific issues in religious education

A summary leaflet is available here.

Sacramental Workbooks

As well as the sacramental preparation which children receive within their Religious Education lessons in school, using ALIVE-O, This Is Our Faith and material written in the RE Department, we also produce materials to be used at home and in the parish to supplement these.

These books - one for each of the Sacraments the children will celebrate - include activities based on the school lessons, notes to help parents follow what their children are learning, and opportunities for child and parent to pray together.

Schools can download an order form by clicking here

ALIVE-O

For the past few years, our primary schools have been using a national programme for Religious Education, called ALIVE-O. This resource is produced by Veritas. It has been - and remains - the core resource for the teaching of Religious Education in every Catholic primary school in Ireland and Scotland.

As "A Curriculm for Excellence" develops, Alive-O will become one of many useful tools for teachers, to help deliver quality experiences of faith and learning for our children. The new curriculum envisages a variety of learning formats and methods, some of which will effectively be delivered through Alive-O, but it also allows teachers to adapt their teaching to the needs of the children and to their own talents and creativity.

The title, Alive-O, reflects one of the overriding concerns of Religious Education, namely, to enable people to become fully alive to the presence of God in themselves, in others, in the Church and in all of creation. All our Religious Education programmes seek to involve the home, the school and the parish in the task of handing on the faith to primary school children.

ALIVE-O materials can be purchased from Veritas on 01926 451730.

A DVD ("ALIVE-O 1-7") is available which gives an overview of the ALIVE-O programme and the principles behind it.

Baptism

Baptism Workbook We have developed a workbook for young children who are going to be baptised.  This Family Workbook is suitable for use with children of approximately 5-8 years of age. It explores what happens at Baptism and explains the signs and symbols of the Sacrament in an age-appropriate way.

The workbook is designed for parents and children to use together, either at home or as part of a parish group. Children of seven and over could use the book, with their parents, as part of the RCIC process.

The workbook offers parents the opportunity to be fully involved in their children’s preparation to receive the Sacrament. It contains five sessions, one of which is to be completed after Baptism. Parishes may order copies of this book by by phoning the RE Department on 0141 226 5898. Alternatively you can e-mail an order to RE@rcag.org.uk  (£3 each)

Service of Eucharistic Adoration

for Children Preparing

for First Holy Communion

'I also recommend that, in their catechetical training, and especially in their preparation for First Holy Communion, children be taught the meaning and the beauty of spending time with Jesus, and helped to cultivate a sense of awe before his presence in the Eucharist.’ (Pope Benedict XVI Sacramentum Caritatis: 67)

We have created a Prayer Service that can be used by Primary 4 children being prepared to receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist for the first time.  This can be downloaded here.

Parish Catechists

Whilst the sacramental workbooks would be sent home by the school for use by the parents and children, the parish materials would be used by trained parish catechists in a parish setting. All of these materials link with and relate to the ALIVE-O programme.

If you are interested in training to become a parish catechist to work with children at times of sacramental preparation you should initially contact your Parish Priest.

Special Educational Needs

In conjunction with Glasgow City Council, the Archdiocese has also been involved in producing material for preparing children with special educational needs for reception of the sacraments. This material can be downloaded from the Special Educational Needs page.

Sex Education
Sex Education Materials
A programme of Sex Education for children in Primary 6/7 has been developed by the RE Department, as a natural development to the Relationships and Moral Education they will receive throughout their school years.

The material we offer is produced within the context of Church teaching and is designed to enable parents to be the first educators of their children in this task. This involves the use of take-home materials for parents of P6 and P7 children and material to be used in school with P7 pupils. Classroom teachers are in-serviced in this area. Integrated into our Primary 7 Classroom Lessons are materials produced by the Archdiocese of Birmingham. To order these materials please phone the RE Department on 0141 226 5898.
In-Service Courses
As well as being involved in the production of Materials for Religious Education, we also offer In-services for teachers throughout the school year.

Click here for the Primary school In-service Menu for next year.

CPD opportunities are also available on a "whole staff" or "cluster group" basis. Contact the R.E. Department for more details.
In-Services in Eyre Hall

"Religious education in Catholic schools takes place within the context of the wider Catholic faith community, in partnership with home and parish. It is an integral part of the Catholic school, which is itself a community of faith. It is designed to assist children and young people to be increasingly able to make an informed and mature response to God in faith and to nurture that faith. It offers opportunities for both evangelisation – proclaiming the Gospel message to all – and catechesis – the deepening of existing faith commitments among believers."
