PRIESTHOOD
God’s call is addressed to all of us. For some the call will be to marriage or the single life. For others the call will be to priesthood, religious life, or the permanent diaconate.

If you have an inquiry about priesthood, please contact your local parish priest or the national agency, Priests for Scotland, at www.priestsforscotland.org.uk

PERMANENT DIACONATE
The Fathers of the Second Vatican Council laid the foundations for the restoration of the Permanent Diaconate.

Pope Paul VI implemented the recommendations of the Council in the document, Sacrum Diaconatus Ordinem on 18th June 1967. Within a few years, in some countries, the first new permanent deacons were ordained.

The Bishops Conference of Scotland submitted a request for the approval of the Holy See for the restoration of the permanent diaconate over twenty years ago in September 1980.

The Holy See subsequently approved the petition in May 1983.

At the meeting with the clergy of the Archdiocese on 21st November 2002, Archbishop Conti indicated his intention to establish the Permanent Diaconate in the Archdiocese of Glasgow.

Since then over eighty men have expressed an interest in the Diaconate in the Archdiocese.

On Sunday 28 June 2009, the first 12 Permanent Deacons were ordained for service in Glasgow.

There are currently 15 men in the first of four years of study and 3 are in the Year of Discernment.

The Permanent Diaconate is open to single and married men. All inquiries relating to the Permanent Diaconate should be addressed to Father Paul Murray at diaconate@rcag.org.uk
